What to Look for in a Hemp Product
When it comes to buying hemp products for your dog, there are a few things to consider when determining the safety and quality of the product.
- Organic: While the U.S. hemp industry is still developing, states that allow cultivation have sent warning letters to growers about the use of unauthorized pesticides. Choose hemp products certified as organic or eco-farmed. Eco-farming growers must follow ecologically friendly practices, like not using recycled sewage and testing for melamine and other contaminants.
- Third-party Testing: It is essential to have lab testing done to ensure the potency and purity of both the raw materials and the finished product. Testing from a reputable lab is done to check for potency, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbes to verify the ingredients on the label are not only safe but also what is in the product. Avoid companies that do not provide lab results or are hesitant to provide them. Transparency should be a priority when it comes to any product that you are putting in your pet’s body.
- Where it’s grown: Consumers may not be able to tell if a product is made from U.S.-grown plants, hemp, or marijuana. Until stricter controls are enforced for hemp growing and processing in the United States, it is better to buy hemp products that contain industrial hemp extracts sourced from established overseas suppliers, particularly those grown in Europe. But when buying US hemp, make sure the grower is transparent.
- Broad/Full Spectrum: When shopping for CBD oil for your pet, you may see “broad/full spectrum CBD oil” or “CBD isolate.”. Broad and full spectrum uses the many cannabinoids and terpenes found naturally in hemp, while CBD isolate contains only CBD. Experts believe the whole plant offers an “entourage effect,” and your pet benefits from a more complete variety of the phytochemicals found in hemp.
- Extraction Process: The most common types of hemp-derived CBD oil extraction are performed by using ethanol or CO2. While some companies use environmentally friendly alcohol to extract the hemp, the most preferred method of high-quality CBD extraction is performed by using CO2 extraction. This is the most gentle and precise extraction method used in a solvent-free, environmentally friendly way.
About Heirloom Pet Products
Heirloom Pet Products was launched on July 1, 2020, by Jason Lysak. He wanted to create a product that absorbs and works significantly faster than other products using hemp oil, which in turn provides the best life for pets.
Its first product line is hemp-based pet products that feature water-soluble meal toppers for added palatability and functional health benefits. These food toppers are designed not only to improve the taste of food for finicky pets but also to deliver a daily dose of water-soluble organic hemp in order to promote a normal and relaxed disposition.
Jason Lysak spent a year researching water-soluble hemp options before launching his products. He worked with a veterinarian to develop the recipes and based the flavors on what his own dogs preferred. The products were created by studying how mammals digest and absorb hemp extract.
Heirloom settled on organically grown, water-soluble broad-spectrum hemp, which starts to absorb and work significantly faster than other products using traditional hemp oil. Hemp is an oil, so many products that deliver hemp in an oil format have limited absorption, but by using a water-soluble product, Heirloom Pet Products work faster and are more effective.
The first three Heirloom pet products are:
Zen Puppy contains 150 mg of water-soluble broad-spectrum hemp with delicious peanut butter and banana flavors. The cost is $21.99 for a 2 oz. bag (approximately 30 servings; 5mg hemp per serving).
Whine Not contains 150 mg of water-soluble broad-spectrum hemp with the yummy flavors of bacon and cheddar. The cost is $21.99 for a 2 oz. bag (approximately 30 servings; 5mg hemp per serving).
Ruff and Ready contains 150 mg of water-soluble broad-spectrum hemp with chicken flavor and a healthy dose of antioxidant-loaded turmeric to enhance bone and joint health. The cost is $21.99 for a 2 oz. bag (approximately 30 servings; 5 mg hemp per serving).
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Heirloom Pet Products meal toppers are formulated with organic, broad-spectrum hemp oil in the United States. Each formula includes 150 mg of water-soluble hemp extract and is intended for supplemental feeding with a complete and balanced diet.
Heirloom Pet Products are GMP- and SQF-certified and are working with the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) to make sure their labels are clear and in compliance with guidelines. All products are veterinarian-reviewed and supported by independently-conducted Certificates of Authenticity.
Heirloom Pet Products use water-soluble broad-spectrum hemp. This hemp is completely free of THC, which is what can cause psychoactive activity or the “high” feeling.
Claims of Heirloom Pet Products
The Heirloom Pet Products line differs from the competition, which primarily offers treats or oils. They believe to have discovered a better science behind CBD products that was not being utilized. Most hemp-based products on the market are not as effective because they are oil-based, while a dog’s body is 70% to 80% water.
Heirloom Pet Products are water-soluble products, and the hemp dose is able to be absorbed 80 times more than an oil product. Water-soluble hemp is more easily and quickly absorbed, and it starts working as soon as it hits a pet’s tongue.

Administering /Test
After using CBD oils on my dog for months, I was excited to try this new product. Trying to get the dosage of oil into my dog’s mouth is always a challenge. I eventually started putting the oil directly into his food, which requires some disguising and can take a while to take effect.
Heirloom products are very easy to use and can be made into a gravy and poured right on top of your dog’s kibble. What I really love about it is that I can add it to Kibble, which has sparked a new love for dinnertime with my dog. He seems to get bored with the same old kibble, but rotating the three Heirloom Pet Product powders has got his tail wagging at dinner time.
The pouches are really easy to open with a resalable closure, and they even include a tiny teaspoon to measure. Heirloom lists the mixing instructions right on the back of the package. They recommend you use 1/2 teaspoon for about every 25 pounds of dog, up to twice per day. I used 1 and a half teaspoons for my 60-pound dog and added it to about a half cup of water.
The first night, I stirred up the powder and water, which took too long for my impatient dog. The next night, I put it in a plastic container with a lid, shook it up, and poured it on.
What I noticed right away was the smell when scooping the powder. Each flavor smells exactly like the ingredients listed on the front of the package. But no matter what flavor I used in my dogs boring kibble he licked the bowl clean in record time. Besides being beneficial for my dog, it obviously tastes delicious.
