Part of the Setter family, the English Setter is a medium sized dog breed that is most commonly seen as having a white-black spotted coat with long fringes coming out from the back of its legs (making it appear as if it is sporting a cape of some sort). Believed to have originated in England, these dogs were meant to set or point upland game birds back 400 years ago, which is why there were referred to as ‘trained bird dogs.’
While the exact date of origin is uncertain, there are records pointing out this type of Setter dog breed as early as the 1500’s, making these some of the oldest dog breeds out there. Due to their nature as being trained bird dogs, this makes their scent tracking abilities quite keen. Possessing quite a lot of energy, these dogs are happy-go-lucky and make great companion dogs. However, when owning one, you should make sure that you give it plenty of exercise.
The English Setter is a great dog to have. Naming it should be of top priority, as it should be with any other dog you own. For that reason, we have provided a list of names that are meant to inspire dog owners.
