Fable 2 Silver Keys: Why You Only Need 50 (But Can Find 51)

Fable 2 Silver Keys: Why You Only Need 50 (But Can Find 51)

Ever get that nagging feeling you’re being watched by a stone face while trekking through Albion? That’s probably a Gargoyle. But it’s the glint of a Fable 2 silver keys stash that usually keeps people up at night. Specifically, the fact that the math doesn't quite add up.

Most players spend hours scouring every inch of Wraithmarsh or the Guild Cave because they think they’ve missed "the one." Here’s the weird part: there are actually 51 keys in the game. You only need 50 for the Hoarder achievement and the final chest in Fairfax Gardens.

Why the extra? It’s basically a safety net from Lionhead Studios. If one glitches out—which happens more than we'd like to admit in this 2008 classic—you still have a shot at completion.

The Keys Everyone Misses (and Why)

Finding the first ten is easy. They’re basically tripping over you in Bower Lake. But then you hit the mid-game and things get... obnoxious.

Take the Bowerstone Cemetery keys. People usually find the one in the shed or at the top of the mansion, but the one in the Shelly Crypt is a nightmare if you aren't paying attention. You actually have to buy the Cemetery Mansion first. Then you go into the crypt, drop down, and look for a literal crack in the wall to smash. If you don't have the hammer or the inclination to hit random walls, you’ll never see it.

Then there's the dog situation.

If your dog isn't trained up to at least level 3 or 4 in Treasure Hunting, some keys literally won't exist for you. There is a dig spot in the Hobbe Cave (Rookridge) that just looks like a black smudge on the ground. Without a smart dog, you’re just a guy staring at dirt. Honestly, it’s one of the few times the dog feels like a mechanical necessity rather than just a companion who barks at chests.

Key Locations by Region

I'm not going to list all 51 here because that’s what wikis are for, but there are specific spots that cause the most grief.

  • Brightwood: The "Archon’s Knot" key is the one people email me about. You have to go to the teleporter at the top of the tower, then vault off the side into a hole you can't even see unless the camera angle shifts. Inside, you have to do an "Evil Laugh" at a statue. It’s dramatic and slightly annoying.
  • Westcliff: Most of these are tied to the environment changing. There's one in a small hut in the ruined camp, and another one you have to swim for. If you don't like getting your Hero's boots wet, you're going to have a bad time in Westcliff.
  • Wraithmarsh: This is where the "bonus" 51st key usually hides. Specifically in the Shadow Court. During the quest where you fight through the shadows, look for a cracked wall on the back left of the room. Smash it. Boom. Extra key.

The Truth About the 50-Key Chest

You’ve spent ten hours collecting Fable 2 silver keys. You finally make it to the Fairfax Gardens. You go under the big manor stairs, past the trolls, and stand before the golden-trimmed chest that requires the full 50.

What’s inside?

50,000 gold. That’s it.

By the time you have 50 keys, you probably own half of Bowerstone and have more money than the King of Albion. It’s almost a joke on the player. However, it also contains the Diamond of Sorrow, which is useful if you’re a completionist or just want to feel fancy. But let’s be real: you do it for the achievement, not the loot.

Dig Spots and Diving Points

Some keys aren't just sitting there floating in the air.

  1. Bowerstone Market: Go under the bridge. There is a dive spot right next to the docks. People walk over this bridge five hundred times a game and never think to jump in.
  2. Oakfield: There’s a key in the Echo Mine. It’s tucked behind some rocks in a room that looks like a dead end.
  3. Bloodstone: Check the waterfront. There’s a key inside a dive spot near the boathouses.

If you see bubbles in the water, jump in. In Albion, bubbles are basically a neon sign saying "Free Stuff."

Mistakes to Avoid

Don't ignore your dog. Seriously.

If you’re trying to find all the Fable 2 silver keys and your dog is still at level 1 treasure hunting, you are wasting your time. Go to the bookshop in Bowerstone Market. Buy the "Treasure Hunting" books. Read them to your dog. It feels silly, but it’s the only way to trigger the "Dig" prompts for the buried keys.

Also, watch out for the "Love Hurts" quest. You can't get into certain parts of the Fairfax Tomb without it. If you finish the game and realize you're at 49 keys, it’s almost always because you didn't do the side quests that open up the late-game dungeons.

Pro Tip: If you're struggling with the Wraithmarsh keys, go back after the main story is over. The fog clears up a bit, and the banshees are less of a headache when you have a Level 5 Inferno spell.

Your Next Steps

  1. Check your region map: Hover over each area in the quest menu. It tells you exactly how many keys you have vs. how many are left in that specific zone.
  2. Train the dog: Get him to Level 4 Treasure Hunting immediately.
  3. Buy the mansions: You need the Cemetery Mansion and Brightwood Tower to access at least three keys.
  4. Save Wraithmarsh for last: It's the most confusing map layout; do it when you're overpowered.

Finding all the keys is a rite of passage for Fable fans. It’s tedious, sure. But seeing that "50/50" (or 51/50) on your screen is the only way to truly say you’ve conquered Albion. Just don't expect the 50-key chest to change your life—the journey is definitely more rewarding than the gold.

Go get your dog some treats. He’s going to be doing a lot of digging today.
