You've seen them. Those weird stone circles or icons on your mini-map while flying over the Scottish Highlands. You probably landed, saw a cube puzzle, and thought, "I'll come back later." Most people do. But honestly, Hogwarts Legacy treasure vaults are basically the backbone of your mid-game gear progression, even if the game doesn't do a great job of explaining why they're there.
They aren't dungeons. Not really.
Think of them as bite-sized environmental puzzles. Some take ten seconds. Others? They'll have you spinning your camera in circles trying to figure out where a random enchanted cube vanished to. While everyone is obsessed with finding every last Demiguise statue, these vaults are where you actually find the legendary gear skins and high-stat robes that make your witch or wizard look like they actually belong in the 1890s.
What's the Point of These Vaults Anyway?
Basically, the Highlands are littered with over 100 of these things. If you're looking for a deep narrative reason for why there are random caves with gear chests everywhere, you won't find one. It's a gameplay loop. You explore, you solve a quick riddle, you get gear.
The gear is randomized. That’s the catch. You might crack a Level 3 lock on a vault near Feldcroft and get a green-tier scarf that's worse than what you're wearing. Or, if the RNG gods are smiling, you pull a Legendary piece with an empty trait slot ready for some Level 3 upgrades. It’s a gamble. But since gear is the only way to significantly boost your Offense and Defense stats outside of Ancient Magic, you kind of have to do them.
Most players make the mistake of waiting until they are level 40 to clear these. Don't do that. The loot scales to your level at the moment you open the chest. If you wait until the end of the game, you're just collecting aesthetic skins. If you do them while leveling, they actually help you survive those nasty Ashwinder ambushes.
Cracking the Code: The Cube Puzzles
Opening the door is usually the hardest part. You’ll see a circular platform on the ground with a symbol. This is where your spell set matters. If the cube has a flame on it, use Incendio or Confringo. If it’s a snowflake, hit it with Glacius. Simple, right?

Usually, the cube is hidden behind some vines or tucked into a nearby alcove. Use Revelio. Use it constantly. The cube will glow blue through walls, making it much easier to track down. Once you find it, Wingardium Leviosa is your best friend. Toss it on the platform, cast the corresponding elemental spell, and the vault door slides open.
Some vaults don't even use cubes. I’ve run into several that just require Depulso to blast open a set of crumbling rocks or Alohomora to pick a lock. The lock level varies. If you haven’t bothered finding Gladwin Moon’s statues yet, you’re going to be locked out of some of the high-tier vaults in the southern regions of the map. It’s frustrating. You fly all the way down to the Poidsear Coast only to realize you can’t get past a Level 3 lock.
The "Chess" Vault Mystery
One specific type of vault drives people crazy. It’s the one with the chessboard inside. You walk in, see a board, and maybe one or two pieces. This isn't just decoration. You need to use Transform on a nearby object—usually a vase or a chair—to turn it into a chess piece.
Then, you have to place that piece in a spot that would result in a "checkmate" against the king. If you don't know the basics of chess, this is a nightmare. Usually, placing a Rook or a Bishop in the right lane triggers the chest to appear. It’s one of the few times Hogwarts Legacy actually expects you to use your brain instead of just blasting things with Bombarda.
Navigating the Map: Where to Look First
Don't just wander aimlessly. The map is huge, and the density of Hogwarts Legacy treasure vaults changes depending on where you are.
- North Ford Bog: These are generally easy. Good for early-game gear.
- Forbidden Forest: High concentration of vaults, but usually guarded by spiders. Lots of spiders.
- Feldcroft Region: This is where the puzzles start getting a bit more creative. You’ll find more of the "pull the handle" or "follow the butterflies" style mechanics here.
- Manor Cape: Save this for later. The enemies roaming near these vaults are often Level 30+.
The southern half of the map, specifically past the Poidsear Coast tunnel, has the highest concentration of high-end vaults. If you’re hunting for specific "Legendary" gear appearances, like the "Officer's Uniform" or the more ornate "Cloaks and Robes" sets, this is your hunting ground.
The Gear Problem and Inventory Management
Here’s the honest truth: your inventory space is a joke.
You start with 20 slots. Every time you enter a treasure vault, you risk filling up. There is nothing worse than finishing a complex wind-current puzzle inside a vault, reaching the big chest, and getting the "Gear Slots Full" notification. You have to go into your menu, destroy something, and then open it.
Do your Merlin Trials. Seriously. You can’t ignore them if you want to be a serious vault hunter. Completing Merlin Trials is the only way to expand your gear capacity. If you haven't done at least two tiers of the exploration challenge for Merlin Trials, you’re going to spend more time deleting gear than wearing it.
Also, remember that you can sell your unwanted vault loot at any vendor in Hogsmeade. Gladrags Wizardwear is the obvious choice, but any hamlet merchant will take your junk. It’s the fastest way to afford those expensive spellcrafts from Tomes and Scrolls.
Dealing With Environmental Obstacles
Sometimes the vault isn't locked by a spell, but by the environment itself. I've spent way too long trying to swim into a vault entrance only to realize I needed to dive at a specific swirling ripple in the water.
If you see a whirlpool or a patch of bubbling water near a vault icon, jump in. Hold the interact button. Your character will dive down and emerge inside the vault. It’s a neat mechanic, but the game barely mentions it after the first time you do it in a quest.

Then there are the "Whirlwind" vaults. You’ll see a bunch of leaves spinning. Use Revelio to find the source. Usually, there are three or four stone pillars you need to activate or small puzzles to solve within a time limit. If you're too slow, the wind dies down, and you have to start over.
Technical Nuances: Glitches and Resets
Let’s talk about the stuff that actually happens when you play. Sometimes, a vault cube will glitch through the floor. It happens. If you’re at a vault and the cube is nowhere to be found, or it’s stuck inside a rock, just fast travel away and come back. The world state usually resets, and the cube will be back at its spawn point.
Also, it’s worth noting that the chests inside these vaults do not respawn. Once you’ve cleared a vault, it’s done. The icon on your map will go dim. If you're a completionist, this is great. If you're looking to farm gear, you’re better off hitting the large bandit camps, as those chests sometimes have different loot tables.
Actionable Strategy for Efficient Vault Hunting
If you want to actually make progress and not just waste time flying around, follow this workflow.
First, prioritize the Alohomora upgrades. Find the Moons. Get to Level 2 at least. Level 3 is better, but Level 2 gets you into 80% of the vaults. Without this, you'll be constantly annoyed by locked doors you can't bypass.
Second, keep your spell sets organized. You need a "Vault Set." Slot Confringo, Levioso, Depulso, and Glacius into one diamond. These four spells solve about 90% of the vault entrance puzzles. Swapping spells in the menu every time you land is a massive time sink.
Third, use your broom for scouting, but land often. Some vaults are hidden behind destructible walls—look for the cracked stone textures that glow under Revelio. Hit them with a heavy spell.

Finally, don't ignore the "Devil's Snare" in some vaults. If the floor is covered in vines that grab you, keep your wand lit with Lumos or fire off an Incendio to clear the path. If you get stuck in the dark, the vault becomes a death trap pretty quickly.
Focus on the vaults in the southern regions once you hit level 25. The quality of the loot spikes significantly there, and you'll find much better traits for your gear. Stop treating them like chores and start treating them like the gear-up sessions they are. You'll have a much easier time with the late-game boss fights if your Defense stat is boosted by high-end vault find.
