Honestly, if you’ve spent any time in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you know the drill. You’re wandering through a gorgeous, Belle Époque-inspired landscape, and suddenly, there’s this weird, bipedal ball thing darting around like it’s had too much espresso. That’s a Petank. Most of them are just annoying little puzzles, but the Isle of the Eyes Petank is a whole different beast. It’s tucked away in an optional late-game area that’s basically designed to make you pull your hair out if you aren't prepared.
You can't even get to this island until Act 3. Once Esquie finally learns to fly, the world opens up, and you’ll find this tiny, red-tinted rock sitting northwest of Visages. It looks like a quick pit stop. It isn't.
Finding the Little Coward
Finding the actual creature is the easy part, sort of. When you land at the Isle of the Eyes entrance, don't just charge up the main stairs. If you do, you’ll miss it. Instead, look to your right. There’s a drop-off leading to a lower alcove tucked under the rock formations.

The Petank is just chilling there in the shade.
But here’s the kicker: you can’t just walk up and whack it. Like every other Petank in the game, this one is a runner. You have to herd it onto its specific altar—a glowing green platform. Because this is the "Green" variety, it’s obsessed with defense.
Herding it is basically a game of "hot and cold." The Petank always moves directly away from you. If you want it to go left, you stand on its right. If you want it to go toward the bridge, you approach from the rocks. It sounds simple, but the pathing can be janky. You’ll probably accidentally kick it into a corner once or twice. Don't sweat it; just back off, let it reset its position, and try again. Once it hits that green circle, the real headache begins.
The 150,000 HP Problem
Let’s talk numbers. On Expert difficulty, this thing has roughly 150,000 HP.
That is a lot for a ball.
Most players jump into the fight thinking they can just burst it down in three turns. They can't. The Isle of the Eyes Petank isn't like the early-game ones that you can brute force. It has a massive health pool and a defense stat that makes your best swords feel like pool noodles.
The Core Mechanic
If you just spam your standard skills, you’re going to watch it flee on turn three while you’ve barely scratched the paint. The secret is the Free Aim mechanic. Every so often, the Petank will expose its core—a literal glowing ball that pops out of its side.
You have to shoot it.
I’m not talking about just clicking; I’m talking about using your range-focused Pictos. If you’ve got Augmented Aim or Piercing Shot equipped on Sciel, now is the time to use them. Shooting the core does massive damage compared to standard hits and, more importantly, it’s the only way to actually chip away at that HP bar effectively.
Why You Keep Losing
There are two big reasons people fail this encounter:
- The Turn Limit: You generally have three turns before it runs away.
- Ignoring Parries: Successful parries and counterattacks can actually delay the flee timer.
Basically, if you play passively, you lose. You need to be aggressive but precise. If you miss a parry, you lose a massive chunk of potential damage and potentially a turn. It’s a rhythm game disguised as an RPG.
Best Team Comp for the Isle
You can’t just bring your favorites and hope for the best. Well, you can, but you’ll probably be loading a save ten minutes later.
Sciel is mandatory. Her Dark-element skills, specifically Sealed Fate, are great for stacking damage, but her real value is in her Free Aim efficiency. If you have the Chation weapon, her output goes through the roof.
Maelle is your second-best bet. Since this Petank loves to hide behind shields, Maelle’s Breaking Rules skill is a literal godsend. It wipes out shields and gives you AP back for every shield destroyed. It turns a defensive nightmare into an AP farm.
Lune rounds out the trio. You want her for the Burn stacks. Even though the Petank has high defense, status effects like Burn tick for percentage-based damage. Over a three-turn window, that tick-damage might be the difference between a kill and a "Better Luck Next Time" message.
The "160 Parries" Myth
There’s a bit of community lore floating around Reddit and Discord about a "self-destruct" mechanic. Some players claim that if you parry the Petank’s multi-hit bounce attack enough times (we're talking 100+ parries), it just explodes.
Is it true?
Kinda. The Petank has a multi-hit attack where it bounces around like a pinball. Toward the end of the fight, it starts doing 20+ bounces in a single move. If you are a parry god and catch every single one, you’re dealing "reflect" damage back at it. It’s not that the game has a hidden "160 parry" trigger; it’s just that the reflect damage eventually overwhelms its health. It’s a cool way to win if you have the reflexes of a cat, but for most of us, shooting the core is safer.
What Do You Actually Get?
Is it worth the stress? Yeah, probably.
The Isle of the Eyes Petank drops:
- 5x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst (Essential for maxing out weapons to Level 33).
- 1x Recoat (For when you realize your skill build is trash and you need to respec).
- 5x Colour of Lumina.
If you’re trying to 100% the game or prep for the final boss, those catalysts are non-negotiable. You can find them elsewhere, but this is one of the densest drops in the game.
The Triple Eye Puzzle Connection
While you're on the island, you'll notice the bridge to the main boss—the Chromatic Boucheclier—is broken. You can't reach the boss until you "pop" three hidden eyes scattered around the island.
The Petank is actually a clue for one of them.
Once you’ve chased the Petank to its altar, look at the ceiling of the alcove where you first found it. There’s a dead Nevron (one of those lanky, creepy enemies) embedded in the rock with a giant eyeball sticking out. Shoot it. The other two are nearby: one is up the steps near the entrance, and the other is right next to the Petank’s altar.
Pop all three, and the bridge fixes itself.
Actionable Strategy for Your Next Attempt
If you’re staring at the "Enemy has Fled" screen right now, here is exactly what you do:
- Rest at the Entrance Flag. This resets the Petank so you can try again immediately.
- Equip the "Cheater" and "Energising Shots" Pictos. These let you use Free Aim more often without burning through your resources.
- Don't Heal. Seriously. Healing takes a turn. If your health is low, just hope your parry timing is on point. You are in a race against time, not a battle of attrition.
- Wait for the Core. Don't just spam attacks. Watch the Petank’s sides. When that core pops out, dump all your AP into ranged shots.
- Focus on Multi-hits. If you use Maelle, her multi-hit fire attacks are great for shredding the guard bar.
The Isle of the Eyes Petank is basically a gear check and a skill check rolled into one. If your damage isn't there, go grind some levels in the Monolith and come back later. There’s no shame in it. This game doesn't pull punches in Act 3.
Next Steps for You:
Go check your inventory for Grandiose Chroma Catalysts. If you have fewer than five, you haven't finished the Isle of the Eyes. Head back to the Visages area, call Esquie, and look for that red island to the northwest. Make sure Sciel has her best range gear equipped before you land.
