You’re standing in the spawn room, zombies are screaming from every corner of the jungle, and you’re staring at that massive stone staircase. It’s closed. Again. Honestly, the shangri la pack a punch duo struggle is real. If you’ve ever played this map with just one friend, you know the frustration of trying to coordinate those pressure plates while a Napalm Zombie is breathing down your neck.
Shangri-La isn't like the newer maps. There's no "quest" to build a machine. It's about timing. It's about not being "that guy" who misses the plate.
The Reality of the Duo Activation
Most people think you need all four plates for every game. You don't. The game scales. In a duo, the map only cares about two specific plates. But here’s the kicker: they aren't always the same ones.
First, you’ve got to get the power on. You’ll find the two switches underground in the power room—just flip them both. Once the turbines are spinning, the Pack-a-Punch system "arms" itself.
In a two-player game, you and your partner need to find the two raised stone slabs.
There are four potential locations:
- Right in the middle of the Spawn Room near the Quick Revive.
- In the Tunnel leading down toward the water slide.
- Between the two Power Switches in the generator room.
- On the far side of the Bridge near the mud maze.
You’ll see them. They’re these circular stone icons on the ground that look slightly "up" or floating. If you're playing a duo, look for the two that are active. You both have to stand on your respective plates at the exact same time.
When you hit them right, the monkey statues on the pedestals stop spinning. That’s your cue. The giant stone staircase in the spawn area will literally rise out of the ground.

The 30-Second Panic
Once those stairs are up, the clock is ticking. You've probably got about 30 to 45 seconds before the temple decides it’s had enough of you.
Look at the sides of the stairs. You’ll see these stone cogs slowly grinding their way toward the top. That is your visual timer. If you’re halfway through upgrading your RPK and those cogs hit the top, a massive waterfall is going to flush you right off the temple.
It’s hilarious when it happens to your friend. It’s devastating when it happens to you and you lose 5,000 points.
Why Duos Fail Here
Communication is usually the culprit. One player often runs off to "check a plate" and gets trapped by a Shrieker zombie. Suddenly, the other player is standing on a plate alone like a total loser while the staircase stays buried.
Kinda helps to keep a "crawler" at the end of the round. Trying to hit these plates mid-round on Shangri-La is basically a suicide mission because the map is so incredibly tight. There is no room to breathe.

Pro Duo Strategies for Success
If you want to actually survive long enough to use the shangri la pack a punch duo method effectively, you need a plan. Don't just wing it.
- The "Lobby Call": Before you even leave the spawn, agree on who takes the "Bridge/Power" side and who takes the "Spawn/Tunnel" side. It saves you from running in circles.
- The Baby Gun Priority: If one of you gets the 31-79 JGb215 (the "Baby Gun"), that person stays in spawn. They can clear the stairs if things get hairy while the other person is Pack-a-Punching.
- The Monkey Thief: Watch out for the monkeys. They will try to steal your power-ups and can actually mess with your pathing to the plates. If you kill a monkey while it’s holding a power-up, it might change into something better, but don't let it distract you from the plates if the round is active.
Honestly, the hardest part of Shangri-La isn't the zombies; it's the environment. Between the mud maze slowing you down and the punji stakes stabbing your feet, getting to the plates in a duo requires actual coordination.
Is it different in the Remaster?
Whether you're playing the classic Black Ops 1 version or the Zombies Chronicles version in Black Ops 3, the mechanic is identical. The only real difference is the movement. In the remaster, you have sliding, which makes reaching the stairs a bit faster.
But the "Duo" logic remains: 2 players = 2 plates.
Don't listen to the old forums saying you need to hit all four. That was a glitch/misunderstanding from 2011. The game knows there are only two of you.
Actionable Next Steps
To master the duo run, your next game should focus on map flow.
Start a match and purposefully leave a zombie alive on Round 5. Practice finding the two active plates and timing your "3-2-1-GO" with your partner. If you can get the rhythm down without the pressure of a full horde, doing it on Round 25 becomes second nature.
Also, make sure you're both carrying enough points. There’s nothing worse than opening the stairs and realizing your partner is 100 points short of the 5,000 needed for the upgrade.
