You'd think a "starter map" would be a walk in the park. It’s not. Ground Zero is basically a meat grinder wrapped in glass and concrete. When Battlestate Games dropped this map, the idea was to give new players a safe haven. Instead, we got a claustrophobic urban nightmare where level 50 "chads" occasionally show up to ruin your day.
The Tarkov Ground Zero map is the first hurdle you have to clear to actually play the rest of the game. It’s small, it’s dense, and it’s arguably one of the most stressful environments in Tarkov.
The Level Cap Confusion
Okay, let's clear this up first because the community is always arguing about it. For a long time, Ground Zero was strictly split. If you were level 1-20, you stayed with other "Timmys." If you were 21+, you were in the big leagues.
As of the latest updates in 2026, the matchmaking still tries to keep the brackets separate, but it’s not a perfect wall. If you’re under level 21, you’ll mostly see other beginners and standard Scavs. Once you cross that level 21 threshold, the map changes. Scavs get meaner, rare loot spawns more often, and you might even run into Cultists at night.
Basically, don't get comfortable.
Surviving the Ground Zero Meat Grinder
If you spawn and immediately sprint into the middle of the street, you're dead. Seriously. The sightlines on this map are disgusting. You’ve got the TerraGroup building, Empire, SkySide, and Nakatani all looking down on each other.
There's a lot of verticality here. You’ll be walking past a window and someone three floors up in the Capital Insight building will tap your head before you even hear the shot.
Use the Underground
Honestly, the basement and parking garage areas are your best friends. They feel spooky, sure, but they let you cross the map without being a target in a shooting gallery. You can move from the TerraGroup side all the way toward the Unity Credit Bank while staying mostly under cover.

Sound is Everything
Because the map is so tight, sound travels weirdly. You'll hear someone running on the floor above you and think they’re right behind you. It’s better to move slow. If you’re constantly sprinting, you’re just a loud beacon for anyone with a headset.
Essential Extracts and How to Use Them
You can't just run to a gate and leave. Well, you can, but it’s rarely that simple on the Tarkov Ground Zero map.
- Emercom Checkpoint: This is the most common one. It’s out by the Unity Credit Bank. It’s usually open, but people love to camp the bushes and the back of the trucks there.
- Police Cordon (V-Ex): This is the car extract. It costs Roubles (usually around 5,000 depending on your Scav karma). You pay, wait 60 seconds, and hope nobody shoots you while you're sitting there like a duck.
- Mira Avenue: This is the one that kills everyone. You must use a green flare. If you walk into that zone without firing a green flare into the sky first, the invisible snipers will end your raid in three seconds. No warnings. No second chances.
- Nakatani Basement: A solid PMC/Scav shared extract or just a regular PMC one depending on your spawn. It's tucked away in the basement of the Nakatani building.
The Quests You Can't Ignore
You’re here because of the traders. Prapor, Mechanic, and Therapist all want a piece of Ground Zero.
Saving the Mole
This is the big one from Mechanic. You have to find a dead scientist in the TerraGroup building. He’s tucked away behind some rubble near the main lobby. He has a key (Scientist's key). You take that key, go to the second floor, and find room 4.
Pro tip: You don't actually need the key if you're brave. You can jump out of the window in the hallway and shimmy across the ledge to get into the room. But you still have to "find" the scientist first to progress the quest. Grab the HDD, extract, and never look back.
Shooting Cans
Prapor wants you to find the mounted guns. One is the Utyos heavy machine gun in the Empire building (second floor). The other is the AGS grenade launcher in the Capital Insight building. You don't even have to fire them; you just have to stand near them.

Loot Spots That Actually Pay Off
Most people think Ground Zero is just for questing, but the loot is actually decent if you know where to look.
The TerraGroup building is obviously the "hot" zone. It has tons of PCs. If you need CPUs, GPUs, or RAM, that’s your spot. But it’s also where the most fighting happens.
If you want a quieter run, check the ASAP Winery. It’s right across from the TerraGroup main entrance. You can find high-tier food and beverage items that sell for a surprising amount on the flea market.
Don't ignore the dead bodies scattered around. BSG put a lot of "static" loot on the corpses. I've found high-tier ammo and even the occasional Lab Access Keycard on the dead Scavs near the Emercom checkpoint.

What Most People Get Wrong
The biggest mistake is thinking this is a "fast" map. It’s small, so players assume they should play it like Call of Duty. That is a one-way ticket back to the lobby.
Tarkov reward patience. If you spawn in and just sit in a room for five minutes, the "chads" will usually clear out or kill each other. Let the map breathe.
Another huge error? Ignoring the Scavs. The AI on Ground Zero is weirdly cracked. They will lean out from behind cars and head-eyes you with a TOZ from 40 meters away. Treat every AI like it's a real player.
Real Tactics for Success
- Bring a Grenade: There are so many tight hallways. If you know someone is in a room, don't peek it. Toss a grenade. Even a cheap flashbang will give you the opening you need.
- Check the Windows: Seriously, look up. Every time you cross a street, look at the second and third-floor windows of the buildings around you.
- Painkillers are Mandatory: If you get your leg blacked out in the middle of the street, you're done. Always keep a Morphine or at least some Ibuprofen in your secure container.
Ground Zero is a test. It’s designed to teach you that Tarkov is unfair, loud, and incredibly punishing. But once you learn the layout of the underground and stop fear-sprinting everywhere, it becomes a very predictable map.

- Load into an Offline Raid: Turn off the AI and just walk the map. Find the scientist's body in TerraGroup and practice the "window jump" into room 4.
- Memorize the Mira Avenue flare spot: Find the dead Scav with the flare on him so you always have a backup extract.
- Bind your "Walk" key: Start forcing yourself to walk through the interiors of buildings instead of sprinting. Your survival rate will go up immediately.
