About Now Fresh Dog Food
Petcurean is a Canadian pet food company based in British Columbia. The company was started by friends in 1999 and is family-owned and operated today. Along with Now Fresh, their popular brands include Go! Solutions, Summit, and Gather.
The company has a nutrition manager who has a Ph.D. in companion animal nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan.
According to Petcurean , Now Fresh is available in different life stages and different breed size formulas for dogs. It features 100 percent fresh meat and oils and contains no rendered ingredients. Their recipes are grain- and gluten-free.
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Now Fresh dog food goes through strict quality and safety standards at plants that are EU, FDA, and CFIA certified. Ingredients are tested before they are received at the plants. Quality assurance tests include, but are not limited to, vomitoxin, aflatoxin, zearalenone, nutritional integrity, and moisture levels. Petcurean provides more information about their testing on their web site .
Petcurean dry pet foods are produced in Elmira, Ontario, Canada. Their canned products are primarily made in Ontario, Canada, and secondarily at a plant in New Jersey, USA. Now Fresh stews and pâtés are made in Wisconsin, USA.
According to Petcurean, their products feature fresh meat and meat meal ingredients from animals passed fit for human consumption by the CIFA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency). The fruits and vegetables used in Now Fresh also come from the human food chain. However, they do not claim that the ingredients are “human-grade.” As soon as any ingredient enters a pet food processing facility, it can no longer be called “human-grade” by law.
All of the meat proteins, grains, cereals, fruits, and vegetables in Now Fresh are sourced from North America, with the exception of the pasture-raised lamb and grass-fed venison, which are sourced from Australia and New Zealand (from EU-certified plants). The company uses no ingredients from China.

We didn’t find any recalls for Now Fresh online.
Go!, made by Petcurean, did have a recall in November 2003. All of the pet food products made for the company by a plant in Texas at that time were recalled due to reports of liver disease or liver failure.
We didn’t find any more recent recalls for Now Fresh or for any products from Petcurean.

Now Fresh specializes in grain-free foods. Until recently, all of their foods were kibbles, but they have now added wet foods (stews, shredded recipes with gravy, and pâtés) to their offerings.

This Now Fresh recipe for adult dogs features 100 percent fresh turkey, salmon, and duck. It also has 100 percent fresh omega-3 and 6 oils from coconuts and canola. As with other Now Fresh formulas, this food has zero grains, gluten, wheat, beef, corn, soy, rendered meats, by-products or artificial preservatives. This recipe is suitable for dogs between 1 and 7 years of age.

Overall, is Now Fresh Dog Food A Good Choice?
We do think that Now Fresh dog foods are good foods with good ingredients. We like the fact that they are made in Canada and that they are transparent about where their foods are made and where their ingredients are sourced.
On the other hand, we do think you need to consider the fact that their foods contain peas in the first five listed ingredients, along with other legumes lower in the ingredient list. This is true for virtually all of the Now Fresh foods we checked.
A conclusive link has not yet been established between legumes and dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs but many researchers do recommend FDA-investigation-potential-link-between-certain-diets-and-canine-dilated-cardiomyopathy, being cautious about feeding dogs foods that contain large amounts of these ingredients.
