The Farmers Dog Food Review

The Farmer’s Dog launched in 2015 after the co-founder’s determination to solve his dog Jada’s stomach issues. After trying every pet food on the market without success, Brett tried a fresh, home-cooked diet at his vet’s recommendation.

The results were staggering and his dog Jada was cured. He began to to rethink the pet food industry from the ground-up and create the simple, healthy product for all dogs.

Quick Summary

If you want to improve your dog’s nutrition and you’re considering a fresh dog food, I do highly recommend The Farmers Dog. My own dog clearly loved every recipe with no complaints.

About

The Farmer’s Dog was formed in 2015 by Brett Podolsky and Jonathan Regev. Podolsky began feeding his dog, a Rottweiler named Jada, home cooked meals per her vet’s recommendation. Jada suffered from chronic stomach issues and every commercial food her tried did not help.

The two founders bootstrapped the company the first year while cooking dog food in a small commercial kitchen in Brooklyn.

The Farmers Dog meal plans start at $18 per week and are customized based on each dog’s age, breed, size, activity level, and health needs. Before delivery, the food is divided into individual servings based on each animal’s caloric needs, since the recommended portions on many commercial pet food packages are often too big.

The system they developed is unique in that it optimizes the amount of food sent depending on the cost to ship and your dog’s needs. This way the cost to deliver is far less than what they would be paying a retailer, meaning they can invest those savings back into their product.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

All of The Farmer’s Dog meals are made fresh in USDA certified kitchens. Meals are formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists   to include proteins like turkey, beef, and pork, vegetables like carrots, kale, cauliflower, and other starches and grains. These items are cooked at low temperatures to ensure they do not lose their nutritional values.

All of the ingredients are human-grade and sourced from reputable food suppliers, local farms, and other human food purveyors that meet USDA standards. They do not use feed-grade ingredients, or process ingredients to be shelf-stable. Each recipe is 100% complete and balanced according to AAFCO standards.

How Does the Farmer’s Dog Work?

In just a few steps, you can get started with a 14-day meal plan that has been specifically designed for your dog by answering a few basic questions. They will ask for your dog’s age, breed, size, activity level, and health issues ( if any) and then they will recommend the right plan.

Of course the cost of The Farmers Dog meals will depend on your dog’s size and how much food they need. You can choose to give your dog 3 flavor choices or less and can choose from chicken, beef and turkey flavors.

Sampson’s Plan

You will receive a confirmation email once your account is set up and then another when your order ships. The meal plan you select will arrive in frozen in pre-portioned plastic sacks. The box is packed with dry ice and in a biodegradable insulated liner to keep the food very cold. You will receive an instruction booklet that will explain how much food to put in your freezer and how much to store in the refrigerator.

The Farmer’s Dog will send your next order out when you have between 2 and 9 days left on your current food. You can always pause or skip an order if you will be away. They guarantee your dog will like the food and offer to send a different recipe or refund your money otherwise.

Unboxing

I received 14 packages of food, which included all three recipes and equates to two weeks of meals. The food was pretty much frozen and came with a storage container and instruction booklets.

Each package of food is a day’s worth of food with and the instructions included say to provide half a pack per meal. This makes it easy to freeze and just take out a package or two daily.

What comes in the Farmers Dog Box

The one thing that stood out with The Farmers Dog is each package had Sampson’s name on it to make sure he knew the food was just for him. It is also helpful if you have several dogs with different recipes.

We started with the Beef  recipe for this review. This recipe uses beef ingredients including USDA beef, and beef liver. Out of the 3 recipes The Farmers Dog offers, this one is the highest in fat. However, high fat content can help with healthy skin and coats.

The carbohydrate ingredients in this recipe are sweet potato, lentils, carrot, kale, and sunflower seeds. The sweet potato and carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber. Lentils are a quality source of carbohydrates and also rich in natural fiber.

Kale is a type of cabbage as well as a dark green vegetable that is especially rich in beta-carotene, vitamins C, vitamin K and calcium. It is also believed to possess potent anti-cancer properties.

This turkey recipe has the lowest fat content of the 3 recipes The Farmers Dog offers. The protein is sourced from USDA turkey and is rich in ten essential amino acids required for a dog to sustain life.

The recipe also includes a mix of parsnips, chickpeas, carrots, broccoli, and spinach which provides a modest sum of carbohydrates and fiber. Here we see parsnips which are very similar to carrots and are high in complex carbohydrates and rich in B vitamins, fiber and other essential nutrients. Chickpeas are also fiber rich but do contain 22% protein which brings up the content for this recipe.

Broccoli and spinach are both green vegetables rich in fiber. Broccoli provides high amounts of vitamin c and is believed to have anti cancer benefits.

Fish oil is added for additional energy source and can help with your dogs coat and skin.

Taste Test

Sampson tried all three flavors of The Farmers Dog on a rotation over the course of a week. I started him out with a mix of kibble and the new food, so that there would be no issues. Since my dog will (and does) eat anything, his stomach had no adverse affects to the new food.

Sampson trying the Farmers Dog Pork recipe

Within three days, I started to give him half a package per day and he seemed to know right away it was time to eat when he saw the package. He was more excited than usual at dinner time knowing he was getting The Farmers Dog and not his usual kibble. I can’t say he had a preference between the beef, turkey and chicken and inhaled each recipe with the same amount of speed.

The Downside of The Farmers Dog

The Farmers Dog is very expensive compared to dry kibble and can run you about $50 per week depending on the size of your dog. However, as compared to other fresh dog food brands, it is on the less expensive side.

The Farmers Dog Monthly Cost Comparison

DOG FOOD BRANDDOG SIZEMONTHLY COST
The Farmers Dog50 to 65 Pounds$ 205.00 to $ 240.00
NomNomNow50 To 80 Pounds$ 224.00 to $ 280.00

The Farmers dog does only offer 3 recipes currently, which is less than most of its competitors. Because it is fresh food it must be refrigerated and this can be problematic if you need to travel with your dog.

One last small gripe is the food packaging. These packages are not easy to open and will require the use of a knife or pair of scissors to open. This can be messy and cumbersome at meal time.
