About The Farmers Dog

The Farmer’s Dog was formed in 2015 by Brett Podolsky and Jonathan Regev. Podolsky began feeding his dog, a Rottweiler named Jada, home cooked meals per her vet’s recommendation. Jada suffered from chronic stomach issues and every commercial food her tried did not help.

The two founders bootstrapped the company the first year while cooking dog food in a small commercial kitchen in Brooklyn.

The Farmers Dog meal plans start at $18 per week and are customized based on each dog’s age, breed, size, activity level, and health needs. Before delivery, the food is divided into individual servings based on each animal’s caloric needs, since the recommended portions on many commercial pet food packages are often too big.

The system they developed is unique in that it optimizes the amount of food sent depending on the cost to ship and your dog’s needs. This way the cost to deliver is far less than what they would be paying a retailer, meaning they can invest those savings back into their product.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

All of The Farmer’s Dog meals are made fresh in USDA certified kitchens. Meals are formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists   to include proteins like turkey, beef, and pork, vegetables like carrots, kale, cauliflower, and other starches and grains. These items are cooked at low temperatures to ensure they do not lose their nutritional values.

All of the ingredients are human-grade and sourced from reputable food suppliers, local farms, and other human food purveyors that meet USDA standards. They do not use feed-grade ingredients, or process ingredients to be shelf-stable. Each recipe is 100% complete and balanced according to AAFCO standards.

The Farmers Dog provides balanced and nutritious meals made with wholesome protein, whole fruits, veggies, vitamins and minerals. The pre-portioned meals are made in USDA kitchens and gently cooked at low temperatures in accordance with USDA facility standards. There are three cooked recipes; beef, turkey and pork.

Sampson’s Plan

You will receive a confirmation email once your account is set up and then another when your order ships. The meal plan you select will arrive in frozen in pre-portioned plastic sacks. The box is packed with dry ice and in a biodegradable insulated liner to keep the food very cold. You will receive an instruction booklet that will explain how much food to put in your freezer and how much to store in the refrigerator.

The Farmer’s Dog will send your next order out when you have between 2 and 9 days left on your current food. You can always pause or skip an order if you will be away. They guarantee your dog will like the food and offer to send a different recipe or refund your money otherwise.

Unboxing

I received 14 packages of food, which included all three recipes or two weeks of meals, in environmentally friendly packaging. The food was pretty much frozen in BPA free packaging and pre-portioned for each meal. Also included was a storage container and instruction booklets.

Each package of food is a day’s worth of food with and the instructions included say to provide half a pack per meal. This makes it easy to freeze and just take out a package or two daily.

What comes in the Farmers Dog Box

The one thing that stood out with The Farmers Dog is each package had Sampson’s name on it to make sure he knew the food was just for him. It is also helpful if you have several dogs with different recipes.

We started with the Beef recipe for this review. This recipe uses beef ingredients including USDA beef, and beef liver. Out of the 3 recipes The Farmers Dog offers, this one is the highest in fat. However, high fat content can help with healthy skin and coats. Let’s take a closer look at the first 5 ingredients.

  • Beef is a healthy protein for dogs being high in protein, iron, zinc, selenium and vitamins B12, B3 and B6.
  • Sweet potatoes support a healthy digestive system due to high dietary fiber content. They are also low in fat and contain essential vitamins like B6, C, and A.
  • Lentils are low-calorie, high-fiber food that helps dogs feel full when eating and keeps blood levels from spiking after a meal. Lentils are a plant-based protein that could contribute to the protein levels in this food.
  • Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.
  • Beef liver is a good source Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Chromium and Copper.

The Farmer’s Dog Turkey Recipe

This turkey recipe has the lowest fat content of the 3 recipes The Farmers Dog offers. The protein is sourced from USDA turkey and is rich in ten essential amino acids required for a dog to sustain life. Let’s look at the first 5 ingredients in this recipe.

  • Turkey is rich in nutrients like protein, riboflavin, and phosphorous. It is low in calories but high in selenium and tryptophan both of which benefit the immune system.
  • Parsnips contain vitamins C and B6 as well as folic acid and potassium. They are good for your dog’s metabolism, and support a healthy nervous system.
  • Chickpeas are considered to be a rich source of protein, potassium, magnesium, and folate, essentials for cell recovery and good health.
  • Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.
  • Broccoli offers dogs benefits including vitamin K, calcium, and potassium. It also has lots of fiber and vitamin C but some dogs may have digestive issues with this vegetable.

Taste Test

Sampson tried all three flavors of The Farmers Dog on a rotation over the course of 2 weeks. I started him out with a mix of kibble and the new food, so that there would be no issues. The Farmers Dog recommends 25% of their food mixed with the old food for the first week. On day 8 you can mix 50/50 of the new and old food and by day 15 it is safe to give your pup 100% The Farmers Dog food.

Since my dog will (and does) eat anything, his stomach had no adverse affects to the new food and transitioned very quickly.

Sampson trying the Farmers Dog Pork recipe

Within five days, I started to give Sampson a half a package per day and he seemed to know right away it was time to eat when he saw me cutting it open. The packaging is not easy to open and you will need scissors and it will be messy.

He was more excited than usual at dinner time knowing he was getting The Farmers Dog and not his usual kibble. I can’t say he had a preference between the beef, turkey and chicken flavors and inhaled each recipe with the same amount of speed.

I did notice a decrease in the amount and size of poop in the yard after only a few days on The Farmers Dog. I did not notice a decrease in weight during the two week trial.

How Much Does The Farmers Dog Cost

The Farmers Dog is pretty expensive when compared to dry kibble and can run you about $50 per week, depending on the size of your dog. However, as compared to other fresh dog food brands, it is on the less expensive side.
